In some of our previous blog postings, we examined a number of key players in the telecom industry. Some of these players have included the likes of Verizon, AT&T, and other telecom giants located on both the East and West Coasts.
In today’s article, we take a look at another telecom company, known as TDS Telecom. Just this past week, this business entity announced they will be expanding their services into the very lucrative “Targeted Fiber to the Home” (also known as FTTH) and IPTV based market segments.
During a recent meeting with investors, the Vice President of Finance, Vicki Villacrez, declared that the expansion into these two markets will be of the utmost priority for TDS Telecom. She explained, “TDS TV has been launched in 20 markets, enabling 147,000 service addresses, or roughly 20 percent of our total footprint . . . We expect to launch an additional seven markets over the remainder of 2015 and we’re pleased with the success of our IPTV deployment.” (SOURCE: https://www.fiercetelecom.com/telecom/tds-telecom-to-launch-iptv-fiber-broadband-7-new-markets-2015).
TDS Telecom has already established a preliminary foothold into these market segments, backed by these statistics:
- By Q2 of 2015, it has added 9,700 additional IPTV subscribers, representing a solid 53% growth rate
- Total revenues have increased so far to a total of $295 million, versus $271 million a year ago. This too represents a growth rate of 9%
However, despite these positive numbers, there have been other areas for the business which have been lagging. These include:
- The wire line market segment, which grew only by 1%
- Both the commercial and wholesale revenues have declined by 4% and 8%, respectively.
Even so, operating revenues increased very slightly. For Q2 of 2015, they were at $1.28 billion, versus $1.24 billion year-over-year (YOY). At the beginning of this new month, August 2015, the earnings per share (EPS) for TDS Telecom was valued at $25.12, which has seen a slight decrease of .04%.
