Introducing the Global Mapper

Blue Marble Geographics is a GIS based software company with headquarters in Gardiner, Maine.  It has been in business since 1993.  The founder of the company, Jeff Cole, has always been motivated to develop innovative solutions for the Geospatial market.  Their first GIS product was the “Geographic Calculator,” first built on a Windows 3.1 platform.  The primary objective of this product was to convert and re-project spatial data.

Today, the company has created a diverse portfolio of products and services which includes the “Global Mapper,” which offers access to a wide variety of spatial datasets for the GIS software developer.  Included with this is the “Global Energy Mapper,” which consists of specific energy symbols, volumetric calculations, as well as a tool for examining seismic surveys.

Blue Marble was weathered through some of the harshest economic recessions, even including the financial meltdown of 2008.  They have also partnered with the New England Environmental Financial Center to develop the interface for the Costal Adaptation to Sea Level Rise Tool (COAST) software platform.  It helps GIS professionals answer such questions as:

  • Is building a sea wall necessary?
  • Is a levee required?
  • Are zoning changes needed?

Just recently, the company announced that it will be exhibiting at the 26th Annual SO/LIC Symposium & Exhibition, to be held in Washington, DC.  They will be showcasing the features of the Global Mapper, as it relates to military applications.  At this symposium, there will be various breakout sessions in which military requirements, as well as statutory and policy solutions will be examined.

The Global Mapper enables military leaders to quickly and easily solve problems in making tactical decisions.  It can also track with GPS technology, analyze any type of terrain, as well as produce various line of sight calculations for the soldier on the battlefield.

Christian Ruenzi, an account manager with Blue Marble Geographics stated, “We are extremely excited to be attending this year’s SO/LIC event showcasing Global Mapper as a truly affordable geospatial solution. This event will offer attendees the chance to see Global Mapper in action and provide some insight into how much functionality is available in this low cost GIS solution.” (SOURCE:  http://www.directionsmag.com/pressreleases/blue-marble-to-highlight-use-of-global-mapper-for-the-military-at-so-l/432446).
