According to a recent China Daily report, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in China has required all newly built homes to install fiber optic connections “where a public fiber optic telecom network is available”.

These communities, about 340 of them in all, receive Internet just like they get their electric utility – straight from the city.

A utility contractor accidentally cut a main fiber optic cable belonging to AT&T, resulting in a widespread outage for much of Northern Alabama. Floyd County, Georgia, as well as other municipal governments in the state, are making a stand against new legislation taking away their authority over cell tower locations. The new legislation is expected to prevent these local governments from regulating cell tower location placement.
